Beauty and fashion. The two worlds seem to be intertwined, like you can’t have one without the other. In fashion, you have models, runway shows and editorials. In beauty, you have pageants, the most well-known one being being Miss Universe.
But more often now, we get to hear different sides of the stories behind these two worlds, to see diverse models on covers of magazines and most importantly, we are slowly getting to know the ups and downs of being on the public eye. I am very excited to share with you a little bit of former Miss Dominican Republic, Carmen Muñoz story and her future plans, in her own words.
Chapter One: Where it all began
My name is Carmen Muñoz, I’m 25 years old and modeling is one of my biggest passions in life. I started modeling at the age of 12 in Barbizon, a renowned school and agency in the Dominican Republic. After its closure, I continued at an another agency named Agnes, and since then have been part of prestigious fashion events in the country like Dominicana Moda, Rep. Dom. Fashion Week, Caribbean Fashion Week and Draft Model International.
Chapter Two: Miss Universe
In 2017, my life’s dream of becoming Miss RD Universo started to come together, and I actually got the opportunity to represent my country in foreign lands. Once I achieved this goal, I quit my job and dedicated all my time, heart and soul to the life I wanted to build.
I know that for the longest time beauty pageants have been considered as banal. This couldn’t be more wrong. Miss Universe standards are very high, and no, I’m not talking about physical beauty. I’m talking about professional goals, being knowledgeable about current and historical events, having the abilities to create projects and to empower women. Beyond the commercial image, the ‘queens’ must be integral women with a commitment for global development.
Representing my country internationally has been one on the most enriching experiences in my life so far. Sharing with people from other cultures and teaching them about our own, is a duty that, with all my heart, I feel like I fulfilled.
Plus, I also believe that Miss Universe is not only a great way represent the beauty of our island, but also to showcase our local talents, like the designers Rafael Rivero, Giannina Azar, Joel Reyes, Leonel Lirio, Camila, Arnaldo Ladies Wear, and help them position themselves in international markets.
Chapter 3: What’s next?
I define myself as a woman who is a fighter, strong, passionate, helpful, empathetic and loving. Money is not as important to me as are my passions and the desire to be better every day. I believe that God has total control over my life and I place my trust in Him.
At this moment, I’m the Director of International Relationships at the Santiago Town Hall. This has been one of the greatest challenges I’ve ever faced, and this is because I’m the youngest person to have ever held this position and I’m a woman in what we all know to be a “man's world.”
My immediate projects include obtaining a Masters degree and continue developing as a professional. When the time is right, I want to start my own family, which is the most ambitious project I think I will ever have.
Moda y belleza. Dos mundos que parecen estar entrelazados, es como si no pudieras existir uno sin el otro. En el mundo de la moda están las pasarelas, los editoriales y las revistas. En el mundo de la belleza, están los concursos, entre los cuales está uno de los más destacados, Miss Universo.
Pero cada vez más estamos escuchando diferente versiones de lo que pasa detrás de bambalinas, vemos modelos diversas saliendo en las portadas de las revistas más importantes y poco a poco estamos conociendo que no todo es color de rosas. Estoy muy emocionada de poder compartir los inicios y los próximos pasos de nuestra ex Miss República Dominicana Universo, Carmen Muñoz.
Capítulo Uno: Donde todo inició
Mi nombre es Carmen, tengo 25 años y modelar es una de mis grandes pasiones en la vida. A los 12 años años comencé a estudiar modelaje en Barbizon y fui parte del último grupo que se graduó antes de que cerraran. Continué en Agnes y desde entonces he participado en los grandes eventos de moda dentro y fuera del país como Dominicana Moda, Rep. Dom Fashion Week, Caribbean Fashion Week y Draft Model International.
Capítulo Dos: Miss Universo
En el 2017 comencé a concretar mi sueño de toda la vida, ser Miss RD Universo y representar mi país en playas extranjeras. Una vez lograda esa meta, renuncié a mi trabajo para dedicarme en cuerpo y alma a mis sueños.
Durante mucho tiempo, se ha tenido la percepción de que los concursos de belleza son banales. La verdad es que esto no puede ser más errado. Los estándares de Miss Universo son muy altos, y no, no hablo de estándares de belleza física. Hablo de profesionalidad, dominio de temas importantes, capacidad de crear proyectos que empoderen a la mujer. Más allá de una imagen comercial, las reinas deben ser mujeres íntegras y comprometidas con el desarrollo global.
Representar la dominicanidad en playas extranjeras ha sido la experiencia más enriquecedora de mi vida. Compartir con otras culturas y enseñarles la nuestra, es una responsabilidad que con todo mi corazón, cumplí.
Creo que Miss Universo nos da una plataforma increíble no solo para representar las bellezas de nuestro país, sino también todo el talento que hay en él, dándoles oportunidad de posicionarse en un nivel internacional, en mi caso los diseñadores Rafael Rivero, Giannina Azar, Joel Reyes, Leonel Lirio, Camila, Arnaldo Ladies Wear.
Capítulo 3: el futuro
Me defino como una mujer luchadora, fuerte, apasionada, servicial, empática y amorosa. No me mueve el dinero, me mueven mis pasiones y deseos de mejorar cada día. Creo que Dios tiene el control total de mi vida y deposito mi confianza en Él.
Actualmente soy la Directora de Relaciones Internacionales del Ayuntamiento de Santiago. Este es uno de los retos más grandes que he vivido. Esto porque soy la directora más joven y, en adición a esto, soy mujer dentro del "mundo de hombres."
Dentro de mi proyecto de vida, está hacer una maestría y seguir formándome como profesional. Cuando el tiempo sea el correcto, quiero tener mi familia. Para mí es el proyecto más ambicioso que pudiera tener.
