As the temperature finally warms up in NYC and it gets even hotter back in the island, summer is getting closer whether we are ready or not. Below are the stories, videos and overall content that you should not miss from this month. From Junot Diaz’s heartbreaking story he finally decided to share (English) to the highlighting the role our women had in 1965’s revolution (Spanish), there is a lot to unpack and a lot to catch up on.

Cardi B among Time’s 100 Most Influential People of 2018
There’s a few of us at Hola, Rita that won’t shut up about our girl Cardi B, and it seems we’re not the only ones who can’t get enough of her. This April, Cardi B landed on Time’s 100 Most Influential People of 2018 list, alongside other badass women of color like Rihanna, Tiffany Haddish, and dreamer activist Cristina Jimenez.

Junot Diaz and The Legacy of Childhood Trauma
“The Silence: The Legacy of Childhood Trauma”, an essay by Dominican American writer Junot Diaz, stayed with us for days after we read it. It touches on difficult subjects like rape and mental illness, which are rarely talked about within our Dominican culture. We believe it’s time to have more conversations about it, and in doing so, we move forward the purpose of the piece, which is to break the silence.

En el Congreso de la República Dominicana se siguen debatiendo iniciativas “de protección” a las mujeres que lamentablemente responden a los prejuicios e intereses de un grupo, en vez de a las verdaderas necesidades de las mujeres. Las mujeres también lucharon
Aunque a veces la historia se empeñe en borrar nuestras contribuciones, las mujeres también hemos tenido una participación importante en las grandes luchas revolucionarias. En el caso de República Dominicana, aprovechamos el mes de Abril para celebrar el legado de mujeres que se fajaron en la Revolución del 65.
