Melanated Travel Diary Launch Party

This past Saturday, March 10th I joined a fellow Dominican and FIT almost (!!) alumna Welmis, from The Soul Flight, to listen to a panel she was participating in during Melanated Travel Diary’s official launch party. MTD is a “New York based movement dedicated to normalizing, encouraging and stressing the importance of black travel through education and visual representation.” In addition to their online platform, MTD also has a non-profit sector called MTD Youth, which focuses on their outreach and educational efforts.
The event took place at The Commons café in Brooklyn, where we were greeted by charming organizers and faux travel tickets and passports containing information about each of the panelists. They took the opportunity to introduce each of the wonderful black women behind MTD and the movement’s mission and vision for the future. This was their first ever event and it completely sold out! Talk about a supportive community.
The attendees had time to network, enjoy some food and listen to the panel with mostly black and brown women from different backgrounds. I know I am biased (ha!), but my favorites were Welmis and Social Media Coordinator Kandice Chavous. Their personalities added a nice rhythm to the panel and, aside from being real funny, each woman had powerful and relatable advice to share.
From choosing the right people to travel with and normalizing the idea of traveling in our communities, to breaking stereotypes by encouraging more black and brown men to travel and chatting about both hostels and hotels, the panel covered relevant and important questions with a genuine desire for the audience to know the real human value of travel and the positive impact it has in our lives and communities to get exposed to different people and cultures

El pasado Sábado 10 de Marzo me uní a Welmis de The Soul Flight, una compañera Dominicana y casi egresada mi alma mater, para escuchar un panel en que ella estaba participando durante el lanzamiento oficial de Melanated Travel Diary. MTD es un "movimiento basado en Nueva York dedicado a normalizar, alentar y enfatizar la importancia del viaje en las comunidades negras a través de la educación y la representación visual". Además de su plataforma online, MTD también tiene un sector sin fines de lucro llamado MTD Youth, que se centra en su esfuerzos educativos.
El evento tuvo lugar en el café The Commons en Brooklyn, donde fuimxs recibidxs por encantadoras organizadoras y boletos de viaje y pasaportes falsos que contenían información sobre cada unx de lxs panelistas. El equipo de MTD aprovechó la oportunidad para presentar a cada una de las mujeres de color detrás de MTD y la misión y visión del movimiento para el futuro. ¡Este fue su primer evento y se vendieron todas las boletas! Que chévere, ¿no?
Lxs invitadxs tuvieron tiempo de hacer networking, disfrutar de picaderas y escuchar el panel consistido casi en su totalidad de mujeres de color y con diferentes ocupaciones y pasiones. Sé que soy parcial (¡ja!), pero mis favoritas fueron Welmis y la Coordinadora de Redes Sociales Kandice Chavous. Sus personalidades agregaron un buen ritmo al panel y, además de ser realmente graciosas, cada mujer tenía consejos poderosos y útiles para compartir.
Desde elegir a las personas adecuadas para viajar y normalizar la idea de viajar en nuestras comunidades hasta romper estereotipos al animar a más hombres de color a viajar, y conversar sobre hostales y hoteles, el panel cubrió preguntas relevantes e importantes con un deseo genuino de que la audiencia conociera el verdadero valor humano de viajar y el impacto positivo que tiene en nuestras vidas y comunidades el exponerse a diferentes personas y culturas.
Si ya viajas o deseas viajar por primera vez o con más frecuencia, te recomendamos que te mantengas al tanto de MTD y estés atentx de más eventos y oportunidades para participar en el futuro.
