Something really special happens when you fill a room with women. There is an energy and a sense of companionship that naturally happens  that I deeply love. You pair that energy with really smart conversations, honest advice and some bubbly and you’ve got one great evening.

This was my second time attending one of OKREAL x Lou & Grey Girl Talk and as always it did not disappoint. The panel consisted of  Y7 yoga studio Co-founder Sarah Levy and ELLE.com Fashion Features Director (she just got promoted!), Nikki Ogunnaike hosted by the founder of OKREAL, Amy Woodside. We talked about everything from biggest challenges in their specific careers, to how they stay sane. As you can image, Sarah Levy does yoga, but not everyday. She was quick to talk about the pressure that exists in the fitness world to be insanely fit and always working out, but she gracefully kept things very realistic.

To be honest, Nikk was the one I was most excited about, for obvious reasons. She is a woman of color working in an industry that is far from diverse, and her advice was honestly pure gold. Quoting her sister a lot, which we all agree sounds like the friend we all need in our lives, she talked about outworking your peers while always being professional, and how she focused on making her bosses work easier, which she credits a lot for her current success for. To stay sane, she runs, which you can imagine how much I loved hearing as well.

“There is enough for everyone to eat”
— - Nikki Ogunnaike, ELLE.com Fashion Features Director

During these type of events I always try to ask questions, especially the harder ones like how did you make it as a woman of color in the industry you are in. To this, she had a flawless response for. She proceeded to say how she believes “there is enough for everyone to eat” and how “there is strength in numbers.” She encouraged us to look for and get close to women alike in similar situations, and constantly support each other. She encouraged us to not be the person that doesn’t want to bring a fellow woman of color into our worlds for fear of ‘being replaced’, but rather look at it as an opportunity to start interesting conversations and potentially help other fellow women of color get better jobs, ask for raises and begin pushing for true diversity.

The sad news is that this was the last Girl Talk of this kind. OKREAL does have other events, panels and mentorship circles happening all year round and it will be interesting to see what they do next. Make sure to follow them and search for local women-centric events near you. If there are none, or you feel intimidated to go by yourself, drop me a note. We need more opportunities like these to learn and network, and I certainly want to begin looking around and finding similar faces around me at every panel, conference and event I go to.
