Charla de Chicas de OKREAL x Lou & Grey con Elaine Welteroth

I’ve been going to talks, panels and even parties for more than six years. I got into it because my dear friends from college were girlbosses, before that was even a “thing,” and because who doesn’t love free stuff? Over the years, they turned into networking opportunities and eventually into content that I love (really love) sharing on this platform, mostly so that YOU can join us next time and see for yourself what can happen when you step out of your comfort zone. Yet sometimes, and this is not often, an event actually changes things for me in ways that go far beyond my resume or this site. They make me feel something that stays with me.

I’ve been to these OKREAL x Lou & Grey Girl Talks before (see here and here), but even before making the line to enter the Lou & Grey store on 5th avenue on Tuesday, June 5th I knew that I had to be in the same space as Elaine Welteroth, who is in fact, one of my idols.

Elaine is a multi-hyphenated creative, journalist and writer, and most notably the former editor-in-chief at Teen Vogue. She was at the forefront of the changes the magazine went through in order to become the progressive and relevant publication that it is now. Elaine is also the second African-American woman to ever hold such position in Condé Nast history. Yeah, let that sink in.

During what can only be described as the most organic and heartfelt conversation I’ve experienced at these OKREAL events, and others alike, Elaine let us into her world, her spirituality, the many relationships that didn’t work out and how they affected her career, the relentless effort it took to get to where she is among many other things so big and so profound I was surprised and even crying through it. Below are some of my notes from that evening.

“I am the source of everything that is coming my way.”
I managed to ask Elained how she navigated being the ‘only one’ in many spaces and among the many beautiful things she said was to bring people in that look and think like you, and call your mom! Or whoever fulfills that role in your life, but have a strong support system and people you can vent to.
“You either get pulled or pushed into your destiny.”
During this talk, she got very personal and mentioned a relationship she was in for stability but that in reality didn’t serve her. “Who you are in your romantic relationships spills into everything you do.”
“Always remember your why.”
“As women, we have such a special instinct.”

Sometimes we lose track of why we’re doing what we do, or question where we are, and then, people that you don’t even know come into your life and give exactly what you need in that moment. And I mean, choose your own adventure, but I do not believe in coincidences. And I know magic when I see it.

Eta que ta’ aquí ha estado asistiendo a eventos como charlas, paneles y hasta fiestas por más de seis años. Me interesé mucho en asistir ya que mis amigas de la universidad eran unas girlbosses antes de que el término se pusiera de moda y por qué a quién no le gustan las cosas gratis. A través de los años estos eventos se convirtieron en oportunidades para expandir mis contactos profesionales y luego en contenido que adoro compartir en esta plataforma, ya que tengo la esperanza de que leer acerca de ellos te animará a salir de tu zona de confort. Pero a veces, y esto no pasa a menudo, un evento cambia mucho más que mi resume o lo que comparto aquí. A veces, me hace sentir cosas que se quedan conmigo por mucho tiempo.

Ya había ido a otros eventos de OKREAL x Lou & Grey (puedes verlos aquí y aquí) pero desde antes de estar en la fila esperando para entrar sabía dentro mí que tenía que estar en el mismo lugar que Elaine Welteroth quien de hecho es uno de mis ídolas.

Elaine es una creativa que rompe los esquemas tradicionales, periodista y escritora, y más notablemente es la ex editora en jefe de Teen Vogue. Ella estuvo a la vanguardia de los cambios que realizó la revista para lograr convertirse en la publicación progresiva y relevante que es ahora. Elaine es también la segunda mujer afroamericana en ocupar ese puesto en la historia de Condé Nast. Sí, no lo leíste mal, solo la segunda.

Durante lo que solo puede describirse como la conversación más orgánica y emocional que he experimentado en estos eventos de OKREAL, y otros por igual, Elaine nos permitió entrar en su mundo, su espiritualidad, las relaciones románticas que no funcionaron y cómo afectaron su carrera, el esfuerzo incansable por llegar a donde ella está, entre muchas otras cosas tan grandes y profundas que de verdad me sorprendieron. Aquí te comparto algunas de mis notas de esa noche.

“Soy la fuente de todo lo que está llegando a mi vida”
Logré preguntarle cómo se hizo para navegar espacios donde ella era la “única” y entre las hermosas cosas que me dijo de mujer de color a otra estaban ayudar a otras mujeres como ella a entrar dichos espacios, y llamar a tu mamá - o quien sea que hace ese papel en tu vida - a menudo para sacarte las cosas del pecho.
“A ti te halan o te empujan hacia tu destino.”

Durante esta charla ella compartió muchas cosas súper personales como por ejemplo una relación en la estuvo en el pasado por estabilidad pero que en realidad no le aportaba nada bueno. “Quién eres en tus relaciones románticas se transmite a todos los aspectos de tu vida y todo lo que haces.”

“Siempre recuerda tu por qué.”
“Como mujeres, tenemos un instinto súper especial.”

A veces perdemos la cuenta de todo lo que hacemos y cuestionamos quiénes somos, pero a veces llegan personas que ni conocemos a nuestras vidas que nos dan exactamente lo que necesitábamos en ese momento. Y osea, cree lo que tu quieras, pero yo personalmente no creo en coincidencias y sé cuando veo magia.
