Everyone Wants Sex

Todos Quieren Sexo

I first heard this quote first on House of Cards, and more recently Calle 13 has a song that is very explicitly about this. Sharing my opinions about it has caused me to dig deep into why that phrase has always caught my attention and it has been harder to put into words than I expected, all because I’m falling into the same mentality of wanting to talk about sex while still sounding  prude. Must be my dominican upbringing and catholic school reveries.

The quote goes like this:

“Everything in the world is about sex, except for sex. Sex is about power.”

Basically, it states that everything we say or do, buy, read, the skills we try to have, the wealth we want to acquire, all we do it’s geared towards being desirable enough for another person to want to have sex with us. But the act itself, having sex, is supposed to define the power dynamics of the relationship.

As women we are constantly aware of how others see us. From an early age they tell us to sit a certain way because that’s how ladies are supposed to sit, brands make us buy stuff to look better for others, headlines in magazines and newspaper focus on the outfit a woman is wearing and many times forget the real message. How we look to others in any particular time is always in the back of our minds, consciously or subconsciously.

The fact that sex is viewed as a prize also contributes to this idea that sex is about power, a notion that has a lot to do with religion and to our culture. An institution like the church putting so much value on another person sexuality has taught many of us that virginity needs to be preserved while teaching the other half to do anything in their power to possess that same virginity. It’s like if you have sex one person wins, and the other one, loses?

Too often, sex is used to prove our value, and here we have to mention our machista upbringings. As women, we only have value if we don’t have sex. while men don’t have any value if they are not having sex. As women, we have the almighty vaginas and as long as we don’t give our virginity up we have the power, but men, the “hunters,” could do anything to grab that power. How is this even healthy?

If by having sex you ever feel powerless or ashamed, you are with the wrong person.

Once I realized that this vicious circle could be broken, sex became empowering. It’s time we embrace sex for what it should be about: connection, enjoyment, pleasure and love.
