Incense, Myrrh and A Beloved Family Tradition

Incienso, Mirra y Una Tradición Familiar Muy Querida

Being close to my family is always a challenge for me. Our dynamics have changed over the years, and not necessarily in a positive way. When the holidays arrive, I always get very nervous because I do not know what to expect from the family interaction.

But there is a special moment with them I always eagerly wait for: The end of the year ritual.

After Christmas Eve and Christmas Day where the stars of the show are the meetings with the extended family, the food, the anecdotes, the secret Santa’s and moremy mother, father, and brothers distance ourselves a bit to reflect about that year.

Individually, each of us (mother, father, brothers) writes a letter addressed to oneself. This is the time to be completely honest. To observe, analyze, and be brutally honest about the following:

  • What did I like about this year?

  • What did I not like about this year?

  • What is within my control?

  • What is outside of my control?

  • What have I accomplished?

  • What do I want to accomplish next year?

These letters need to be ready for New Year’s Eve. All 6 of us meet at our house living room. Each person burns their letter by placing it in a container, adding incense and myrrh. At that moment, my mother prays as we walk  together through the whole house scattering the smoke. Then, we go out to dinner and wait for the new year at our Abuela's house.

This, however simple it may seem, is a very important and serious exercise for me. I feel it is an opportunity for purification, for making peace. When we leave the house, we leave behind the year and its weight. With the smoke, our space is purified. Upon returning to the house, the energy feels different and is the omen of the year.

  • Qué cosas he logrado.
