Katherine Motyka: Crear Iniciativas Sociales Con Un Impacto Positivo

I heard from Jompéame when they launched a campaign to help a man get resources to improve the way he was living. This shook me. And although this project has always caught my attention, I didn't look into it in detail until recently. The first thing I learned about Jompéame is that a very dedicated woman was behind it. Katherine Motyka is one of the young Dominican women who have tasked herself with creating social initiatives that have a positive impact on society.
But there is so much to recognize about Motyka, starting with her academic career. She is the second Dominicana to be ever accepted at the Singularity University at NASA, where she graduated first in her class on Industrial Engineering, earning her a scholarship to study Materials and Manufacturing Science at Jonkoping University in Sweden. But it is after completing her studies that she discovered the world of entrepreneurship, winning the competitive Startup Weekend Santo Domingo competition twice within a very short time.
In 2013, Katherine was selected as a member of Global Startup Youth, traveling to Malaysia to learn more about global trends in youth entrepreneurship, which she now applies to her own startup. Whatever free time she has left, she employs it as an active volunteer at non-profit organizations and coordinating the logistics of Civil Innovation Lab events. In 2014, she was accepted to the Clinton Global Initiative University in Arizona, among thousands of young applicants from around the world.
Motyka’s personal focus is ambitious and direct: turning linear mentality into a broader action range. What started as fundraising for other startups in 2015, has become a platform for social causes and emergencies, and it has raised more than 17 million pesos for more than 5 thousand cases countrywide. These donations are financial, and they come from independent donors, meaning el pueblo. The idea is not only sharing the cases but to achieve the financial goal in just one week.
Some of the characteristics that Jompéame can brag about are credibility and transparency. People can follow up the cases through photos and videos posted and feel part of the process as well better understand where their donations are going. Jompéame works with categories related to education, health, childhood, shelter, alimentation.
The company has been recognized by TIC Americas, and selected as a finalist in the National Youth Recognition, The Venture, among others. It has also been the winner of the Social Startup Price by Cemex Dominicana 2017, and one of the 30 Business Promises by Forbes Dominicana and of “Impúlsate Popular” by Banco Popular Dominicano.

Escuché sobre Jompéame por primera vez cuando lanzaron una campaña para ayudar a un señor a obtener recursos básicos para mejorar la manera en la que él vivía. Esto me estremeció. Y aunque este proyecto siempre me intrigó, no le prestaba mucha atención hasta ahora. Lo primero que noté fue que este existe gracias a una mujer muy dedicada. Katherine Motyka es una de las dominicanas que se han propuesto crear iniciativas sociales que tengan impacto positivo en la sociedad.
Pero hay muchísimo que reconocer sobre Motyka, comenzando con su carrera académica. Ella es la segunda Dominicana en la historia en ser aceptada en Singularity University de la NASA, donde fue la primera de su grupo en ingeniería industrial, ganando una beca para estudiar Ciencia de Materiales y Manufactura en Jonkoping University, en Suecia. Después de completar sus estudios, ella descubrió el mundo del emprendimiento, siendo ganadora del Startup Weekend Santo Domingo dos veces en un tiempo muy corto.
En el 2013, Katherine fue seleccionada como miembro del Global Startup Youth, viajando a Malasia para aprender más sobre tendencias globales en emprendimientos jóvenes, los que ahora aplica en su propio. Y en su tiempo libre ella hace voluntariado activo en organizaciones sin fines de lucro y coordina la logística de los eventos de Laboratorio de Innovación Civil. En el 2014, ella fue aceptada en Clinton Global Initiative University en Arizona, entre miles de aplicantes de todo el mundo.
El enfoque de Motyka es ambicioso y directo: cambiar la mentalidad lineal hacia un rango más amplio. Lo que inició como una recolecta para otros startups en 2015, ahora es una plataforma de causas sociales y emergencias. Ha recaudado más de 17 millones de pesos para más de 5 mil causas en todo el país. Estas donaciones son financieras, vienen de donantes independientes, es decir, del pueblo. La idea no es sólo que se conozcan los casos, también es lograr conseguir la meta financiera en sólo una semana.
Algunas de las características de las que Jompéame puede presumir, son credibilidad y transparencia. Las personas pueden seguir el caso a través de fotos y videos y sentirse como parte del proceso, además de tener un mejor entendimiento de hacia dónde van las donaciones. Esta proyecto trabaja para temas como educación, salud, niñez, vivienda y alimentación.
Ha sido reconocido por el TIC Americas y ha sido seleccionado como finalista del Premio Nacional de la Juventud, entre otros. También ha sido ganador del Premio del Emprendimiento Social de Cemex Dominicana 2017 y es una de las 30 Promesas Negocio, según Forbes Dominicana, y de “Impúlsate Popular” del Banco Popular Dominicano.
