Three Days in Kansas City

Tres Días en Kansas City, Missouri

When I first moved to the States I didn't know if I was going to stay after college, so I resolved to do something I couldn't really do while living back home: Travel.

Since I didn't need to spend a lot of money getting to the U.S,. I started to get curious about this vast country, with so many different cities and places to discover. This is why I was able to see the Golden Gate Bridge and admire its distinctive color and the way it clashes with the fog, dip my toes in the cold waters of Maine, and gasp at the enormity of the Grand Canyon - all within a tight budget.

Now that I've built a life in this foreign land, and even when I feel not welcomed more often than not, I still want to get to know this country. This is why it feels me with so much joy that I've got family and good friends in many places in the States, including Kansas City, Missouri.

I had already been in the pretty young and charming city before, and this past Labor Weekend I finally got the chance to explore it better. We started our vacation with First Friday, a really cool initiative that brings food trucks the first Friday of every month to this specific street, where you can pop into art galleries while you eat some gyros or nachos and even stop for a beer (or three). First Fridays are also accompanied by other cool local activities like special sales, especially in Hickory street, where secondhand and vintage lovers like me can find unique pieces at great prices.

During our three day visit we also visited the Nelson Atkin Art Museum (an absolute must), the World War I monument where we witnessed an incredible sunset overlooking downtown, and the city and River Market, where we purchased an awesome selection of spices.

I also cannot talk about Kansas City without mentioning the food, which let me tell you, was insane. From delicious brunch options and solid BBQ to tasty ramen and finger licking ice cream, we left a couple of pounds heavier and happier than we came.

If you are looking for a fun, relatively cheap and young U.S. city to visit, definitely consider Kansas City. I’m a firm believer that you don't need to be “rich” in order to travel and have fun, and KC will definitely prove my point.

Cuando me mudé a Estados Unidos no sabía si me quedaría luego de la universidad así que me propuse a hacer algo que no podía hacer desde la isla: Viajar.

Ya que no tenía que invertir mucho dinero en llegar a Nueva York y de ahí seguir a otras partes me volví muy curiosa acerca de otros estados en el país con tantas diferentes ciudades y lugares para descubrir. Es por esto que pude ver el puente Golden Gate y admirar su distintivo color rojo y como choca con la neblina de San Francisco, mojar mis pies en las aguas de Maine y perder unos o dos latidos al ver el Gran Cañón por primera vez - todo a un precio moderado.

Ya años después y habiendo construido una vida en este país, aun cuando no me siento necesariamente bienvenida, me interesa conocer más de este país. Es por esto que me causa mucha felicidad tener familia y buenos amigos en varios lugares del país, incluyendo Kansas City, Missouri.

Ya había estado brevemente en la joven y encantadora ciudad hace par de años, y este pasado fin de semana largo por fin se me dio el chance de poder explorar con más tiempo.  Comenzamos nuestras vacaciones con el ‘Primer Viernes,’ una iniciativa bien cool que convoca a carritos de comida el primer viernes de cada mes a esta calle donde puedes visitar galerías de artes mientras comes unos gyros o hasta nachos y hasta tomarte una cerveza (o tres).

El Primer Viernes está acompañado por otras actividades locales y especiales, específicamente en la calle Hickory, donde hay una tras otra tienda con artículos y ropa vintage y de segunda mano a buenísimos precios.

Durante nuestra visita de tres días también visitamos el museo de arte Nelson Atkin (un lugar que debes absolutamente visitar), el monumento de la Primera Guerra Mundial donde se puede ver un increíble atardecer, y el River Market donde compramos una selección de especias buenísimas.

Pero no puedo hablar de Kansas City sin hablar de sus restaurantes, los cuales déjame decirte, estuvieron geniales. Desde deliciosos desayunos y BBQ auténtico a sólidas opciones de ramen y opciones de helados super originales, nos fuimos con dos o tres libras de más.

Si estás buscando una ciudad divertida, joven y relativamente barata en los Estados Unidos definitivamente considera Kansas City. Soy una fiel creyente de que uno no necesita ser “rico” para viajar y disfrutarlo, y KC es muy buena prueba de ello.
