Viaja Como los Locales
Barcelona has been at the top of my travel list for years, so naturally, I learned everything I could about it before coming. But now that I’m actually living here, one of my goals is to really get to know the culture and traditions of this beautiful and rich country I’m in, and to get the real experiences you could never translate to paper.
Here every town has its own traditions and some are native to the each region. I recently visited a small town near Barcelona called Sant Cugat that celebrates L’encabronada del Broc. The legend goes like this: the devil constructed a bridge in exchange for the soul of the first person that crossed it. Unfortunately for the devil, the first to cross was an old smelly goat. Now, they keep the tradition alive and many other creatures accompany the goat on this specific day where they also have markets, food, music and correfocs which can be translated to “fire runs.”
This trip was totally spontaneous and it exceeded my expectations. Sometimes you just have to get up and go. I hadn’t felt a sense of community and pride in their traditions as I did that day, so I will definitely try to add more little trips like this one wherever I go. Also, getting away from the touristy attractions and having more of a local experience reinforced my belief that some experiences can’t really be put into words, so I will let the photos here tell the story of that day.
Barcelona ha encabezado mi lista de viajes por años, así que naturalmente, aprendí todo lo que pude sobre esta ciudad antes de venir. Pero ahora que estoy viviendo aquí una de mis meta es realmente conocer la cultura y las tradiciones de este hermoso país y tener experiencias que nunca se podrían traducir a un papel.
Aquí cada pueblo tiene tradiciones propias y algunas son nativas de cada región. Recientemente visité un pequeño pueblo en las afueras de Barcelona llamado Sant Cugat, donde se celebra L’encabronada del Broc. Según la leyenda, el diablo construyó un puente a cambio del alma de la primera persona que lo cruzara. Desafortunadamente para él, la primera en cruzar fue una cabra vieja. Ahora, los locales mantienen esta tradición viva y otras criaturas acompañan a la cabra en este día donde también tienen mercados, mucha comida, música y correfocs, lo que se puede traducir como “corridas del fuego.”
Este viaje fue totalmente espontáneo y la verdad es que superó mis expectativas. A veces solo tienes que animarte e ir. No había visto un sentido de comunidad y de orgullo por las tradiciones como en este día y desde ahora siempre intentaré agregar viajes de este tipo a cualquier lugar que vaya. Además, alejarme de las atracciones turísticas y tener una experiencia más local reforzó mi creencia de que algunas experiencias no basta con contarlas, por eso dejaré que las fotos te cuenten un poco más de lo que viví.
