Dos Días en Beacon, Nueva York
New York is a pretty cool place to live. There is always something going on, something to see, something to do and something to aspire to. “It all happens here”, yet over the years living here, it has finally dawned on me just how much is always going on. Even if I am taking a breather by treating myself or staying at home, I have a hard time turning off the sense of urgency that seems to always be in the air.
Not too long ago I had the chance to escape the city for two days and it honestly did wonders for both my mood and mental health. I think we tend to forget just how easy it is to escape this crazy city some of us call home, and how much we need it.
Located right after Cold Spring, one of my favorite places, Beacon, New York is a charming Mid-Hudson town that has drastically changed over the years to accommodate the younger crowd, with solid local restaurants, great bars and curated stores that will make you wish you actually had space for furniture and time for flower arrangements.
We arrived on a Friday evening and after checking into our Airbnb, located within walking distance from the town’s Main Street, we set out to taste some local brews and bar food at 2 Way Brewing. After stuffing our faces and bonding with the locals, we had every intention of continuing the drinking and exploring but the 20 degrees got the best of us and we made it back to the Airbnb, where we were greeted by our hosts, some friends and family of theirs and other Airbnb guests with solid beer options and wine to share. The conversation and the vibe was so great we stayed in their kitchen chatting and laughing well into the night and to be honest the whole night only cemented my love for Airbnb and the incredible experiences it naturally enables.
After a toasty long night sleep we made it to Homespuns Food, where we had some decent breakfast, followed by a lengthy walk on Main Street where we stopped at my now favorite place in New York, Ellas Bellas Bakery. This charming place features and entirely gluten free menu with insanely good options like fresh loafs (WHAT!?) and a myriad of cookies and pastries. We also stopped at this amazing female artisans only store, Howling At The Edge of Chaos, where we had the chance to meet the owner, learn more about the local culture and offerings and support local female artists.
We finished the trip at Dia:Beacon where we spent what could easily be one of the best weekend afternoons ever, roaming the spaces of an old factory filled with art while being mesmerized by how close we could get to the pieces and the light filtering each room. Dia:Beacon is the museum for the Dia Art Foundation's collection of art from the 1960s to the present and a place you absolutely need to add to your list right now.
I’ll let the photos do the talking but I think this is worth repeating: Get out and get to know the state of New York. We all need to get out of the city more often and It is so freaking worth it.
Nueva York es un lugar increíble para vivir. Siempre hay algo que hacer, algo que ver, un evento al cual asistir y algo a lo que aspirar. "Todo sucede aquí" siempre digo, pero luego de varios años viviendo en esta ciudad es que finalmente me doy cuenta de la cantidad de eventos y actividades que siempre están ocurriendo. Es tanto así que incluso cuando me tomo un respiro o me quedo en casa, se me hace difícil deshacerme de la sensación de urgencia que parece estar siempre en el aire.
Hace poco tuve el chance de escapar de la ciudad por dos días y es increíble lo que este corto viaje hizo por mi estado de ánimo y mi salud mental. Creo que tendemos a olvidar lo fácil que es escapar de esta agitada ciudad que algunos de nosotros llamamos casa, y cuánto lo necesitamos.
Ubicado justo después de uno de mis lugares favoritos, Cold Spring, el pueblo de Beacon es una encantadora ciudad que ha cambiado drásticamente a lo largo de los años para acomodar a una multitud más joven, con restaurantes locales, excelentes bares y tiendas que harán que quieras tener espacio para muebles y tiempo para arreglos florales.
Llegamos a Beacon un viernes por la noche y después de registrarnos en nuestro Airbnb, ubicado bien cerca de la calle principal de la ciudad, salimos a probar algunas cervezas locales y picaderas en 2 Way Brewing. Después de pasar un buen rato con gente local y probar todas las cervezas, teníamos toda la intención de seguir explorando pero el frío nos venció y regresamos a nuestro Airbnb, donde nos recibieron nuestros anfitriones, algunos amigos y familiares de ellos y visitantes con cerveza y vino para compartir. La conversación y el ambiente fueron tan geniales que nos quedamos en la cocina hablando y riéndonos hasta bien tarde y para serte sincera, la noche solo consolidó mi amor por Airbnb y las increíbles experiencias que naturalmente permite.
Después de una buena noche cerquitita de la calefacción, comenzamos la mañana en Homespuns Food, seguido de un largo paseo por Main Street donde nos detuvimos en mi nuevo lugar favorito de Nueva York, Ellas Bellas Bakery. Esta encantadora panadería y café cuenta con un menú totalmente libre de gluten con increíbles opciones como panes frescos (¿¡QUÉ !?) y una gran variedad de galletas y pasteles. También nos detuvimos en esta increíble tienda de mujeres artesanas, Howling At The Edge of Chaos, donde tuvimos la oportunidad de conocer a la dueña, aprender más sobre la cultura local y apoyar a las artistas con nuestras compras.
Terminamos el viaje en Dia: Beacon donde pasamos lo que fácilmente podría ser una de las mejores tardes de fin de semana recorriendo los espacios de una antigua fábrica llena de arte mientras nos emocionábamos por lo cerca que podíamos estar de las piezas y la luz que filtraba cada habitación. Dia: Beacon es el museo de la colección de arte de la Fundación Dia Art desde la década de 1960 hasta el presente y un lugar que absolutamente necesitan agregar a su lista hoy mismo.
Dejaré que las fotos hablen por sí solas de este fin de semana, pero creo que vale la pena repetir: Tomen un carro o tren y conozcan el estado de Nueva York. Todos necesitamos salir de la ciudad con más frecuencia y siempre vale la pena.
