Rosalia Mendoza from The Urban District
Instagram strikes again, this time introducing me to Rosalia from The Urban District, a blog dedicated to art and writing.
On top of the awesome views of Santo Domingo all over her feed, what really caught my eye was her passion for art history. Although I have personally seen Dominican art expand both inside and outside the island, the lack of both economical and cultural support our society gives to the arts is painfully minimal. With people like Rosalia out there, I have faith that things can change for the better.
Tells us a little bit about yourself!
Hello! My name is Rosalia Mendoza but people call me Lia. Im from Dominican Republic, currently studying advertising as a way to channel my creativity. I share all of my passions and interests in the arts through The Urban District, a place to showcase art and writing from well known international people, dominicans, and strangers like myself.
When did you first become interested in art and writing?
Ever since I was a little girl I was always interested in the arts, especially in writing as it was my way to channel my emotions, all the way from happiness to childhood anger, which mostly consisted of being mad at my cousin for not playing Barbie with me. I believe it was during my teens that I developed my art skills which I then formally showcased at my first art expo called "Ode To Women." Right now I'm focusing on my writing and career, with a special project coming soon to help promote art in the Dominican Republic.
Are you receiving (or have received) any formal training in art, art history, or both?
I always try to take every opportunity available to expand my knowledge. I've taken classes at Chavón, but I am mostly self-taught on both areas, devouring articles, movies, and books about my favorite artists.
What would you like to see more of in the Dominican art scene? What do you feel is growing/getting better and what do you think we are lacking?
I wanna see more strangers' art! I want young artists to have the resources to showcase their art. Alongside an artist friend of mine, Arlyn Garcia, we are working to make this possible little by little, with a new project we'll be revealing soon.
On the other hand I feel there's definitely more interest and enthusiasm from the public to support the arts with many new art related events happening these days.
What would you say to any young student interested in going into art and/or writing in Dominican Republic?
I would tell them to go for it! As long as you're doing something for yourself and with passion, do it. If you're willing to make art, to create and to touch people's hearts with it, everything else that was holding you back won't matter, because you'll have the courage to work on what your heart says, which is something not many have the guts to do.
Where do you see yourself in the next 3-5 years?
I see myself working alongside young artists, helping them showcase their work, writing more and seeing "The Urban District" grow as a bigger place for art & writing.

Además de las bellas vistas de Santo Domingo que normalmente acompañan muchas de las fotos en su perfil, lo que de verdad me llamó la atención fue su pasión por la historia del arte. Aunque personalmente he visto nuestro arte crecer tanto dentro como fuera de la isla, el apoyo tanto económico como social es todavía mínimo. Creo que con más personas como Rosalía promoviendo el arte, más que nada nuestro arte, tengo fe de que las cosas pueden cambiar.
Dinos un poco acerca de ti!
Hola! Mi nombre es Rosalía Mendoza pero la gente me llama Lia. Soy de la República Dominicana y actualmente estudio publicidad, más que nada como una manera de proyectar mi creatividad. Comparto todas mis pasiones en The Urban District, una plataforma que utilizó para escribir y mostrar el arte tanto nacional como internacional y de extraños como yo.
¿Cuándo dirías que fué la primera vez en la que te interesaste en al arte y la escritura?
Desde que era muy pequeña siempre me interesaron las artes, en especial la escritura ya que era una manera de proyectar mis emociones, desde felicidad hasta la rabia que uno puede sentir cuando niño, la cual casi siempre era porque mi prima no quería jugar a las muñecas conmigo. Creo que fue durante mi adolescencia que comencé a trabajar en mis habilidades en el mundo del arte, las cuales presente en mi exposición llamada “Oda a la Mujer.”
Ahora mismo estoy concentrada en mi escritura y mi carrera, con un proyecto especial que lanzará pronto con el propósito de promover el artes en la República Dominicana.
¿Estás recibiendo (o has recibido) algún entrenamiento formal en el arte y/o historia de arte?
Siempre trato de tomar cualquier oportunidad que se me presente para expandir mi conocimiento. He tomado clases en Chavón, pero la mayoría de lo que se lo he aprendido yo misma devorando artículos, películas y libros acerca de mis artistas favoritos.
¿Qué te gustaría ver más en el ámbito artístico en la isla? Dirías que el mismo está creciendo y mejorando y que crees que todavía nos falta?
Quiero ver el arte de más extraños como yo! Quiero que los artistas jóvenes tengan los recursos para enseñar su arte. Al lado de otra amiga artista, Arlyn García, estamos trabajando para hacer esto posible con un pequeño proyecto que estaremos revelando pronto.
Pero entiendo que hay que decir que definitivamente el interés y el entusiasmo hacia las artes ha crecido en el país con nuevos eventos tomando lugar estos días.
¿Qué le dirías a un joven que esté interesado/a en perseguir el arte o la escritura como su profesión en la República Dominicana?
Les diría que se lancen! Mientras lo estés haciendo para ti y con pasión, hazlo. Si estás dispuesto/a a crear arte y con el mismo tocar el corazón de otras personas, todo lo que te mantiene lejos de hacerlo no importa, porque tendrás el coraje de trabajar en lo que dice tu corazón, lo cual es algo que muchos no tienen el valor de hacer.
¿Dónde te ves en los próximos 3 a 5 años?
Me veo trabajando con artistas jóvenes, ayudándolos a poder enseñar su arte, escribiendo más y viendo al Urban District crecer como una plataforma más amplia para escritura y arte.
